IMHO (at least on the system side) we should try to mimic what gcc and
emacs does. (and perl, python etc...)

For the personal dir we could do something similar, or just require
the user to run lyx with an option saying where to find the personal
dir.

It would be nice to fix up this before 1.4.0, although it is running
awfully late. It would help for future version, and also perhaps
testing...

Opinions on that issue?
