Gentoo installs packages directly from source codes using a sort of bash 
script named 'ebuild'.  What we prepared was an ebuild to install Lyx 1.4.0 
unavailable at the time of writing.  Some hours ago gentoo developers wrote 
us the announcement that Lyx 1.4  is now included into the latest 
distribution and it's fully supported ;-)
