OK. I understand now that people like this feature so much, and want
to keep it even if it is viewer-dependent and do not function
reliably. To my understanding, menu items that do not work as expected
should be disabled or removed since they can raise doubts about lyx'
quality. Choosing between 'this is a crappy application with a
non-functional menu item' and 'I hope that lyx provide an update
feature', I tend to like the latter. :-)
The menu item is always functional.
It always updates the dvi/pdf/ps/whatever file - so it works.
Click on the file in your favourite file manager - you'll
see the new content.

This works for plenty of viewers too, acrobat is the only one I know
of that is broken.  Perhaps the pdf options should go away when
this broken viewer is selected, it still works for dvi . . .
