Hello, I have just received a mail from Nicolas Le Novere who points out mistakes about the dates quoted for TeX and LaTeX in the Introduction and UserGuide.
Nicolas tells me that TeX has been first published in 1978, and LaTeX in 1982, and I agree that there is a big difference with the values in the manuals (1984 and 1985). The first date is confirmed by http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=whatTeX The second one is mentioned in http://www.grappa.univ-lille3.fr/FAQ-LaTeX/1.1.html Could somebody with more knowledge than me on the subject further confirm this, and maybe modify the manuals ?
