I meant what LaTeX distribution. In case you are using teTeX, please upgrade to TeXLive because
teTeX is outdated and since a few years no longer under development. Also update your TeXLive if
possible using its update manager program.
LyX Version 1.6.0(Fri, Nov 7, 2008) under openSUSE 10.3 64 bit
- installed from source, not from SUSE repository. (The SUSE Repository
actually just provides version 1.5.2.0.)
I recommend to upgrade to LyX 1.6.1. We provide a SUSE installation package for
it:

If I try to convert ps2pdf or pdflatex or dvipdfm I get the following
error message:

should work on every LaTeX system. Can you compile documents where you use margin notes?
I have another LyX version 1.5.2.0 on openSuse 10.3 64 bit on another
machine that does not make problems,
So the problem must be your LaTeX installation.
