When I try to generate a PDF copy of the math help file I get an error
message complaining about the file cancel.sty being not found.

The big yellow note at the beginning of the Math manual tells you this:

"To export this document to PDF, PS or DVI the LaTeX-packages braket, cancel, eurosym, mhchem and was should be installed. If they are not installed the document can be export anyway but the sections where the packages are required will not appear in the output. An exeption is mhchem; if it is not installed, this file cannot be exported."

If cancel is not installed, the file should be compilable, but the PDF will not have the section about canceled formulas.

If you are under Windows, installing missing packages is easy:

- open an Internet connection
- open the LyX file and view it as PDF

Alls packages needed by the LyX file will then automatically be installed from
the Internet.

If you are not on Windows, use the TeXLive package manager to install the packages braket, cancel, eurosym, mhchem and was (if not already installed).
