In relation to the first, the behaviour of LaTeX is even more subtle; if the reference is on the same page it should say 'on this page'; if single page mode is on, it should say 'on the previous page' 'on the next page' if the reference is to one of those pages; if two page mode is on, it may, as appropriate, also say 'on the facing page'. But perhaps we should make that subtlety clearer. John --
