I've just started using LyX for real writing, after fiddling with it on
and off for a couple of years. On the whole: great! There are, as I'
sure you know, still some things that need work. One of these seems to
be the Table editor. The documentation is a bit sketchy, and I find
myself having a very hard time editing a table that goes beyond the
basics. I want to reproduce something like this:

...but make it look nice. The LyX fragment below is the best I've been
able to do so far, and trying to set borders on all the cells just the
way I want them is driving me crazy. It seems to me that when you click
on a cell, the Table Layout window should change to reflect the state of
that cell. If I'm just confused, please let me know. I think that the
way to do this right (someday?) will be to have a different way of doing
selection when editing tables (like the table editor in FrameMaker,
maybe?). There needs to be a way of distinguishing between selecting a
cell, selecting a row, selecting a column, and selecting text in a
table. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions about how to make this
work better, I'd love to hear them. For now, I guess I'm about to learn
how to do tables in Latex.
