Thanks to everybody for the quick help on the geometry package. I have
also discovered the "Use Geometry Package" check box at Layout->Paper on
the menu bar, a choice that I had (stupidly) overlooked before.

My Linux distribution seems to have an adequate geometry package
installed, and an initial test indicates that I can get some control over
the top margin. Evidently my failure to check the Use Geometry Package was
preventing this before.

Is this correct?

It appears that a .5 inch top margin setting produces approximately a
1-inch actual margin on the paper. My printer is HP Laserjet 5L.

How can I learn what causes the difference betweent the Lyx setting and
what actually is printed? Is it plausible that the printer itself adds
the half inch?

Finally, is there an FAQ that deals with beginner questions of this kind?
