I have followed your suggestions as close as possible, yet no change.  
Typing ctrl-b in normal text toggles marked text bold/normal, but nothing
changes when typing ctrl-b in math mode. 
Since it is not possible to use the Layout->Character menu, changing 
family font was unsuccessful, too. I do not know how to invoke the same 
change through a key combination.
