There are some explanations about that in Customization.lyx (I guess
you found that out). Othe rthan that, the best thing to do is too look
at existing classes (letter classes in this case) and try to
understand how to modify them for your own use.

Could you show us what you did put in your layout file?

Did you try the dinbrief layout? Is it less powerful? In this case,
having supprot for g-brief would be a very good thing...
