By "math roman" do you mean that to be italicised, or upright? I presumed
the latter. So, the subscripted material should also be upright
text-style font. Here's what I did: in a math inset, type
\mathrm{L}_\mathrm{time}
actually, the }'s will appear, in red, on their own. The _ will put you
into subscript, which by default makes the text size smaller.
Now, you can also do this with keyboard shortcuts to set font shapes, and
when you first enter this, it will not display WYSIWYM. But, when you
re-open the file, it will be displayed correctly.
