Thanks, this did the trick.  This is now what the system looks like:

- Red Hat 5.1 with upgraded bits
- xforms-0.88.1-1.i386.rpm
- xforms-devel-0.88.1-1.i386.rpm
- lyx-1.0.1.tar.gz

and everything works fine.
