latex to lyx

Dear Lyx users
    I have just donwloaded lyx-1.0.1 and read some of the documentation
available. Though the docs clearly state that lynx won't import all
latex documents I wonder whether it would be a work-around for some
cases.  I tried to import some of my miktex files into lyx and got
loads of error msgs (the first one was: expecting \end{document} and
found \end{eqnarray}).
    Does lyx use its own tex implementation or tetex?
