Jean-Marc,Aah, now it is clear!
Although I had read that section in the User Guide, I had
missed the subtle point.  If I override default behaviour with
say "htb", if Lyx cannot place the figure here, top, or bottom,
it then places it at the *top* of the next page, with text
allowed to flow beneath. Yes, that is what I want.
