Our document's life line is:

ps2pdf simply calls ghostview with the right parameters. The man page
says:
It does not compress the output at all, except for character
bitmaps: it can't use LZW because of Unisys' patent
claims, and it doesn't yet use other compression methods
for images.
Is there another way to generate PDF files?

I don't want to only keep the files, I also want to deliver them to
customers, who mostly use the Acrobat Reader (I'm working in a
Win-world). I can live with gs/gsview, but others don't and that's the
problem.
(Learned today something new: gsview/gv open .ps.gz and .pdf.gz files.
Wow!).
gzip compresses a 50 MB PDF file to 0.9 MB, now I'm really scared. Can
someone help me making those files smaller?
