The quickest way I've found to do this is to use "Math Mode." When you
need to type "square meters," for instance, you can do this:

Key: Meaning:

Ctrl-M Toggle Math mode
Meta-M Math Text mode (makes your letters upright, not italic)
m letter m :)
Meta-M Exit text mode
^2 Puts a super-scripted "2" there
space Exit superscript
space Exit that particular equation

If you use these a lot and don't want to type them manually all the
time, (there's lots more fiddling around if you want to do stuff like kg/m^3 :)
you can define "math macros" for them. Read section 5.5 of the User Guide for
info on how to do this, and note that when you define a macro it must be in the
"Standard" style or it won't be usable by LaTeX although it will appear to work
in LyX.

Subscripts can be done by typing an underscore, "_"; fractions with
"\frac".  Watch the LyX status bar when using the Math Panel to insert stuff;
you will see the TeX names for what it's doing, and later you may find it
faster to type them directly instead of using the Panel. (I'd rather type
"\times", for example, than grab the trackball to insert a multiply symbol.)

Good luck,
