lyxserver - loading a file to a running lyx

How does one use the lyxserver to load a file onto the running lyx? I
tried to mimic
the examples in hte help files with teh buffer-open command but all that
happens is 
that I get is the file-open dialog box. 

Any help/ideas! Thanks in advance.
