Reinhard Borek helped me to figure this out.

I will try this.

I'm using margin notes for sidebar information, which can sometimes
exceed 50 words. When the sidebar text appears close to the bottom of a
page the text extends right through the footer and off the page. This
wasn't at all what I expected. It seems to me that it should either
move the margin note up so the text fits, or wrap it to the next page.
Is this just a bug in whatever class handles margin notes that I can
correct by upgrading? Centering the margin note in the page was just a
perceived method for fixing the problem, but I would prefer to keep the
margin note close to the text I insert it next to.

Thanks much for the help.
