Essentially, I was getting a behaviour where Lyx (1.0.4) was inserting
extra spaces between non-roman characters and their sub- and superscripts.
Anyway, the problem turned out to be that in a preceeding paragraph I had
an inset formula of the form

r_\textrm{wave}

Upon reloading of this, this was automatically changed to

r_[empty square] {wave}

which resulted in an error

Line ~130: Math parse error: Expected {. Maybe you forgot to enclose an
argument in {}
Line ~130: Math parse error: Unmatching braces
 Math Panic, expect problems!

The error was caused by my misremembering of the command mathrm rather
than textrm.

Sorry for the incorrect error report.

Thanks,
Rod.
