That may be true, but in the practical situation you want to be able to
receive faxes as well as send them. mgetty is _by far_ the best modem getty for
linux, and it knows how to do faxes perfectly. You _have_ to install it if you
wish to log in over the 'phone, or receive a fax. So you might as well use the
sendfax part which has arrived on you system as a side-effect.

Cut and pased from .lyx/lyxrc

# Use this for the mgetty+sendfax faxspooler.
\fax_command "faxspool '$$Phone' '$$FName'"

You then run faxrunq when convenient, like off a cron job in the middle of the
night when the telecom toll charge is low, to actually send the faxes. Or run
faxrunq from an icon or the command line if you want the fax to go immediately.

What could be simpler?

Yes.

faxspool does all the conversion stuff and puts a fax header on the message
too. Works a treat directly from LyX.

mgetty+sendfax is available from ftp.leo.de, but I do not know the actual url
off hand.
