Free memory doesn't matter in modern Unixes, but

6-8 megs is barely enough if you're running single user Linux system, but
12 megs on multi-user AIX system is definitely not enough. Or maybe I
misunderstood the numbers.

Hmm, AFAIK xemacs takes at least as much memory as LyX.
