A virtual row is exactly that a row which you create by Ctrl-Return, and yes
i is needed that you insert at least 1 character to create a new one. Pay
attention that creating a row in one cell does visually create them also in
the other cells but they are not there really until you do the Ctrl-Return
also in that cell for all the virtual rows in the other cells of the same row.

(a bit confusing but I hope you understand ;) this will all change in the
upcoming new LyX version when we have tabular-insets the Ctrl-Return hack will
vanish and the cell will break automatically in rows (as normal text does) if
you set a lenght for that cell.
