I think I've found my problem, but I don't know the
solution. lyxrc.defaults in the main lyx subdirectory did indeed have
a null value for \latex-command. What's more, subsequent reconfiguring
in the lyx subdirectory told me that LaTex2e was "not usable" It also
said that dvips was not present, but it just wasn't in the default
path (only present in one users path).
My problem is that I *do* have LaTex2e. It was installed with my Slack
7.0 distro, and worked with this distro before I reinstalled the
system. The latex system resides in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex.
I'm going to try to reinstall the TeX tree and see if that makes a
difference, maybe there was something that corrupted when I originally
installed it.
