Hi Martin,

I assume that the lyx binaries on the download site are not the ones
I've compiled some time ago (there were some revisions of LyX since
then), but I could help with some information. But this requires some
information from you, first. Most important: What does it mean you
were "not able to unpack the binaries"? What happened exactly, and
which error messages were displayed?

May be the reason is very simple, like missing permission to write to
the desired file system or so. Try to check things like that first, an
give us some more information. The problem should be solvable, since
I've not found any serious problems with LyX on AIX since I've started
working on RS6000 workstations (two and a half years ago).

                                                Happy LyXing, Dirk

P.S.: Good decision to avoid M$ based products whenever it's possible!
