It would appear that after lots of help from a number of places, the
problem can be traced back to the following:
when I run lyx as maximised, I get the problem, when I run it as a
window with about three centimeters gap around the bottom and left most
edges of the window it works fine.
I have a 17inch monitor, an old matrox graphics card with 8mb, running
XFree 3.2 (I think -- whatever comes with redhat 6.1) at 32bpp. My
suspicion is that it is caused by physical refresh/redraw rates ...
HOWEVER, I am pretty sure it didn't happen in 1.0.4, and when I have
time I shall verify this, or not, as the case may be.
