Hello,
I'm the developer who works on the Graphics Inset, that is the component
that is responsible for the insertion of graphics into LyX documents and
emiting the LaTeX code for them. That is I'm working on the NEW Graphics
Insert as opposed to the old (and unsupported) FigInset.
Some changes that are already implemented is the support of the graphicx
package instead of graphics, and the use of no extension in the latex
output to simplify PDF output when that is introduced. This are the
results after a complete rewrite.
There are quite a few features that will be added, for example the
auto-conversion of file formats, say from EPS to PNG when generating PDF
files, and from JPG to PNG or EPS when generating PS or PDF outputs.
Various other features that are intended to be added are embedding of the
graphics file, supporting stuff like picins (text flowing around image)
and various other extensions.
My question pertains to priority settings, the current code does not yet
support inline viewing of the image file in the document, that is it
leaves a rectangle saying that here will be an image. I'm currently
working on that, but I wanted to know if this is more important than new
features or less important. The net question is this, assuming I can get
either inline viewing or additional features into the Graphics Inset for
the next version of LyX, what would you prefer?
Comments are solicited.
