lyx inserts the \protect in the wrong way, not before the command,
just before the whole inline math-command.
however, if you do following steps, all works
(only for math in captions):
opne math box,
write all the muthstuff you need until an special mathsymbol
write \protect and do a space. the backslash is not seen!
write your mathsymbol
