The only thing you do wrong doing it manually is that dvips needs to
know which format is used in the dvi file (as xdvi needs to know too!).

So have a look at the dvips and xdvi manual pages and how to call them
correctly so that you get the format you want (or do it inside lyx who
knows about all this :)!
