put the cursor right there where you like to insert the
bibliography. than insert->Lists&TOC->BibTex reference
put in the bibfile name (without suffix) with whole path
and choose a bibtexstyle, like plain, alpha or anyone
else.
now lyx searchs in this database, when you insert a citation.
