Here's what works for me: Inside the equation, type '\' followed by '{'
resulting in a red (TeX) bracketed region. Inside the pair of red
brackets, type '\rm' followed by a space, followed by 'where'. This should
place a roman "where" inside the equation at that point. In other words,
put the \rm inside the brackets like this: {\rm where}.

Thanks. Syrus.
