I thought I'll reply anyway: I compile LyX with gcc 2.95.2 and compaq
cxx V6.2-024. I also have gcc 2.8.1, but I do not rely on it any more.
Note that egcs 1.0.x has mostly the same level of C++ support as gcc 2.8.1,
so they should be kept/abandonned together.
This would mean that we require egcs 1.1.x (aka gcc 2.91.x) as minimum
requirement (GNU-wise).
