I'm running the same setup as you are. I used the MacTeX distribution to get TeX installed and then I just installed LyX. That is the only software I had to install. I have only used BibTeX and that has always worked just fine for me. I don't have any experience with biblatex though. If you want to send an example file over I'm happy to test it out just to confirm if there are issues or not but I don't know if I will be much help in the trouble shooting area.
