About an hour after I wrote the email, I decided it was a better use of my time to trial-and-error create new, more modern VMs than to try to diagnose this problem. I now have LyX working mostly correctly in a Lubuntu 16.04LTS VM, and will be using that for the 2nd editions of several of my books. Of course none of this changes the fact that as the years go on, creating and maintaining a productive LyX system gets continuously more difficult, but I do really appreciate the help that you and Kornel gave me.
