Slightly off topic: Normally I can cut off white space of a graphic by using the limitation box (Auf Begrenzungsbox zuschneiden, in German). But this does not work in the appended figure. I just did the following:

 * inserted your image into a LyX document;
 * clicked on it to open the graphics dialog;
 * went to the Clipping tab;
 * put a check next to "Clip to bounding box";
 * clicked "Get from File" to load the bounding box defined in the
   image file;
 * adjusted the corner points somewhat randomly; and
 * clicked "Apply" ("OK" also works).

That eliminated white space inside the image (and, with aggressive clipping, parts of the image as well).
