The last is true: BibTeX documentation (btxdoc.tex) tells:

note: Any additional information that can help the reader.
The first word should be capitalized.

i.e. it is an optional field that appears in the reference list. For
comments you can use any "never-to-appear" field (i.e. any thought up name
that is not required nor optional) However, it might be a good idea to use
annote for this, as this use is widespread and supported by e.g. tkbibtex.

(BTW: tkbibtex also shows for every entry which fields are required,
optional, and additional (ignored by bibtex) by separating these by black
bars in the browse window.)

My suggestion would be: Use a normal editor to change every occurence of
note to annote and you are fine.
