(e.g. from Ubuntu PPA?). In addition, you can try to open lyx from a command line (x-terminal window) and see if there is a more specific error message from lyx2lyx. It is also possible to run lyx2lyx from the command line and configure it with options (in Debian, it is not in the PATH, though, so you must call it with the complete path): /usr/share/lyx/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx --help Günter
