I've always been a pdflatex user (and still am). However, I recently needed to switch fonts in a somewhat complicated document and was able to do so painlessly and used XeTeX and LuaTeX with equal ease and no problems. Have you just tried using them? I don't think you need to replace what you have, just augment it (if you don't have these already). - Joel
