I'm waiting for Liv to create a .deb package and post it to the PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~lyx-devel/+archive/ubuntu/release
<https://launchpad.net/%7Elyx-devel/+archive/ubuntu/release>). Mint
uses the Ubuntu releases. So I do not have it yet.

this is apparently the one I need: qtbase5-dev
Good. Synaptic can install that for you (and will, with your
approval, install any required dependencies).

Thanks, Paul, will wait for Liv's package. Will this be announced in
this list?
Wolfgang
I'm not sure. My suggestion is to add the PPA. In the Mint menu, find
and run Software Sources. Click on the PPAs button, then click "Add a
new PPA..." and enter "ppa:lyx-devel/release". After that, refresh
the package database (you'll be prompted to do this). From then
onward, the update manager will add LyX to the suggested updates
whenever the PPA has a new version. You won't get the new versions as
quickly as those who compile from source, but on the bright side
updates are about as painless as possible.

Thanks, Paul. I followed your advice, sounds easy. Hope it doesn't
take too long, since I still did not manage to get the spellchecker
working.
Wolfgang
Wolfgang,
For what it's worth, here is what I'm using for spellchecking. Via the
Software Manager, I installed Enchant and Aspell (the engine it uses). I
have a mix of language dictionaries installed. Curiously, only the
English dictionary for Aspell is installed; I have a bunch of Hunspell
dictionaries, as well as some Myspell dictionaries. German ("real",
Austrian and Swiss) is via Hunspell, and works, so apparently Enchant
can use dictionaries for other engines besides the one it uses. After
installing Enchant and Aspell (and maybe some of the dictionaries -- I
don't recall which I installed and which just showed up on their own), I
started LyX, went to Tools > Preferences... > Language Settings >
Spellchecker, set the engine to Enchant and turned on continuous
checking, and it worked.
HTH,
Paul
