 on

uname -a
SunOS NAME 5.8 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-80

with

 make --version
GNU Make version 3.78.1, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath.
Built for sparc-sun-solaris2.8

worked fine for me.
