I am writing figure legends for a paper I will soon be submitting for
publication. The figure being referred to contains some basic symbols
(circle, square, triangle, and a white/empty cross (like a plus sign)). I
can get a circle and triangle easily enough from Math panel but the box and
cross are more problematic. I did find several box symbols that are useful
but not a single empty cross symbol seems to exist for lyx.

The closest cross symbol that I found that approaches what I need is
ding{57}. The problem with it is that it is filled. As a matter of fact,
ALL the other crosses that are available are filled too except for one
religious cross/crucifix symbol. How could I alter one of the filled cross
symbols that it is actually non-filled/empty?

This brings me to a wish for lyx... All wordprocessors have the ability, as
part of the many and varied fonts available, to display symbols. The math
panel comes close to this in that you can select a button and see what
symbols are available, what they look like. It would be REAL nice to be able
to do this with all symbols. Perhaps a menu or submenu could be added that
would permit one to view all the symbols available and simply click the one
you wish to use instead of figuring out the Latex command string plus
requisite preamble required to make it work?

The only reason I knew of the other symbols available was because I
downloaded a METAFONT document that listed all of them. If not for this
chance event, I would have no idea as to the variety available for use.
