When using the multicols package, floats will not appear. 

And by setting the document settings to two columns and alternating between one 
and two columns using \onecolumn and \twocolumn, I can't seem to smoothly 
alternate between one and two columns on the same page. It seems Lyx creates a 
page break when you do this.

You can bypass this page break by using multicols, but then you encounter the 
figures problem
