I'm not taking sides in this too-heated argument, but my practice is to make every variable and filename consist of the characters that in ASCII would be 32 to 126, and except for underscore I never put punctuation nor spaces in variable names and filenames. When somebody sends me a file whose filename has spaces, I just delete it unless it's important enough for me to remove all punctuation and replace spaces with underscores. Unless I remember to quote every variable in every shellscript, space or punctuation within filenames cause malfunction. Life's too short.
