JMarc, I'm back and lyx is once again working as it has for a couple of decades. Something invisible to me must have clogged the system because trying to navigate to a directory in a web browser (firefox and chromium) produced the same lack of response. Every few years something constipates the computer and it requires a reboot to clear the clog.
