There is also a poem.sty file at CTAN
ftp://ctan.tug.org/tex-archive/info/ltt/poem.sty which is an example from
a "LaTeX Tips and Tricks" book, I think. You got me curious enough to
tinker with it a bit, but the comments are in German, so I'm have a bit of
trouble figuring it all out. It apparently is for creating a book of
poetry and defines a new environment "poem". This allows numbering and the
easy creation of a poem title and its incorporation into a "table of
poems". Something like
\begin{poem}{On the Soul of a Machine}
This really is a dumb machine,\\
I wish that I could sell it.\\
It never does just what I want,\\
but only what I tell it.\\
\end{poem}
In theory, "On the Soul of a Machine" goes into the table of poems in the
front matter of the book, and is then typeset with the poem itself - but
I'm having spacing problems. Anyway, if anyone else in interested in this,
we might be able to make a workable LyX layout out of it.
