Interesting. There are several pdftex here:
[root@salmo /usr/local/texlive/2023/bin/x86_64-linux]# ll pdftex

and
/usr/share/texmf-var/fonts/map/

I think I need to remove /usr/share/texinfo/, /usr/share/texmf-config/,
/usr/share/texmf-dist/, /usr/share/texmf-local/, and /usr/share/texmf-var/.
I thought I had removed all previous TexLive2022 and earlier. Apparently
not.
I'll remove the old directories in /usr/share/ then try tlmgr and pdftex
again.
