Thanks. 1st I found that if I choose biblatex natbib mode then numeric does work. As you mentioned I also found I needed biblatex-ieee package and select ieee option for bibliography.
Now it works, but as I found previously, the bibliography thus formatted doesn't look like the ieee formatting produced by the old bibtex mode.
