Ah this is very intersting! Perhaps this is already known, but if not,
your observation gives an idea for a quick workaround (and for narrowing
in on the root cause).

Chris, Can you open some documents and then open the command buffer (I
think with alt+x or command + x maybe on mac?). This will open a small
toolbar at the bottom of your screen. Enter the following in the toolbar
and press Enter:

  command-sequence buffer-close-all; lyx-quit

Does it quit successfully, without crash, if you do it this way?
