I think my approach works: the problem was that I seemed to have a
textclass.lst that listed docbook even thought I didn't have sgmltools v2.
Perhaps the .debs don't reconfigure? When I ran configure manually as root, I
got things cleaned up. So I believe that my Autoconf macro should be
sufficient.
