Matrices (math environment)

I wonder if anybody has experience with creating matrices in Lyx or Latex.
Lamport's book sort of covers using matrices (arrays), but I am unable
to create a simple matrix using Lyx.  If I could get instructions for
creating a 3x1 matrix, I should be able to figure out what I need, e.g.

  [ x ]
  [ y ]
  [ z ]
